Entertainment Weekly's most recent issue featured the EW 1000, composed of lists and more lists ranking the best cultural artifacts from the last 25 years. Below is the 'new classic' music list in particular.
I can't help but mention a few of my observations. First, it's clear that the cultural influence or impact of the album (or perhaps purely sales alone) is often weighted more than the actual music itself. And they're trying to represent a broad spectrum of genres. So just take that as a given before scanning down the page. That's the only way to explain the inclusion of Kelly Clarkson at #29, right? Or Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Coldplay, Christina Aguilera, etc. I'm a big Cat Power fan, but my god, #13? Thrilled to see Prince on top...lovin' In Rainbows at #10, but can't believe it outranks the much more influential and groudbreaking (in musical terms at least) Ok Computer which sits at #62. U2, Madonna and Beyonce (wtf?) are the only others to show up twice. Cheers for Tom Waits at #16. As will always be the case, the choices are occasionally obvious, often questionable but fun nonetheless. Enjoy.

It really annoys me that Cat Power is #13. Absurd!
